Getting To The Bulgaria - Departures Board

Getting There

Travelling to Bulgaria from the UK is straightforward, with multiple options to suit various preferences and budgets. Major airlines, including British Airways and TUI, and low-cost carriers such as Ryanair, Jet2, Wizzair and easyJet, offer direct flights to Sofia, Varna, and Bourgas from several UK cities. Flight times are generally around three to four hours, making Bulgaria an easily accessible destination for both a beach and ski holiday.

Getting From The Airport To Your Resort

Depending on where you land and what sort of holiday you're on, there will be different ways to get from the airport to your hotel. If you're on a city break in Sofia, public transport is fine for getting from Sofia airport to the city centre. If you're off on a beach holiday, having a pre-organised airport transfer can be the best, and with Jet2 and TUI, that's generally included.

Tour Operators

Although you can book your flights and hotel separately yourself, one of the best ways to book a holiday is through an ABTA or ATOL protected tour operator. Companies like TUI, Jet2holidays, and Thomas Cook specialise in tailor-made packages that include flights, accommodation, and sometimes even luggage and airport transfers. These packages can offer significant savings and the convenience of having all the planning taken care of by professionals.

Where To Stay In Bulgaria

Where To Stay

Beach Holidays

Accommodation options in Bulgaria vary from luxury hotels to charming guesthouses, catering to all tastes and budgets. Along the Black Sea coast, resorts like Sunny Beach and Golden Sands are famous for their extensive facilities and vibrant nightlife, making them perfect for those looking for a lively beach holiday.

For a more tranquil experience, consider staying in Nessebar or Sozopol, where you can enjoy the beauty of ancient towns filled with rich history and romantic seaside settings. These locations offer boutique hotels and family-run B&Bs that provide a more intimate and authentic Bulgarian experience.

Sofia

Inland, the capital city Sofia offers a variety of accommodation from luxury international chains to local boutique hotels, all providing easy access to the city's cultural sites and bustling street life. And with low cost airlines like Ryanair, Wizzair and easyJet offering flights from across the UK, Sofia city breaks can actually be really affordable.

Ski Holidays In Bulgaria

Ski Holidays

Bulgaria is also a premier destination for ski holidays, boasting some of the best-value skiing in Europe in the Rila mountain range. Resorts like Bansko, Borovets, and Pamporovo are well-equipped to cater to both beginners and experienced skiers, with a range of pistes and lifts. Bansko particularly stands out with its modern lift system and a blend of well-groomed slopes and challenging off-piste options.

These resorts also offer excellent après-ski environments, with cozy taverns (mehanas) and lively bars to unwind in after a day on the slopes. The ski season typically runs from December to April, providing ample opportunity to hit the slopes on a budget.

When To Go - Sunshine

When To Go

The best time for Bulgaria holidays largely depends on the type of holiday you’re after. The summer months from June to August are ideal for beach holidays, with temperatures averaging around 28°C along the coast. This is the peak season when the Black Sea resorts come alive with tourists and locals alike.

For ski enthusiasts, the winter months from December to March are perfect, as the mountains are covered in a thick layer of snow ideal for skiing and snowboarding.

Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are excellent times to visit for those interested in exploring both Bulgaria's cultural sites and natural landscapes, and its beaches, with milder weather and fewer crowds. You'll find cheap Bulgaria holidays around these times.
