Nearest Beach: Llevant Beach (500m)

The Attica 21 Barcelona Mar hotel is a great all round hotel by the beach. Relatively affordable, outdoor pool, clean, modern and 7 minutes to the nearest metro station (Selva de Mar) means it makes our top 10 favourites. It is a little residential around this area but you'll still find a few good restaurants in the area.

Nearest Beach: Mar Bella Beach (450m away)

While it's not overly glam, for those who want a clean, comfortable and cheap hotel by the beach in Barcelona, the Euro Hotel near Diagonal Port does the job and is perfect for those on a budget. In one direction, a 200m walk will get you to Platja de la Mar Bella, while 500m in the other direction is the Poblenou metro station with easy access into the city centre.

Why we like it: Cheap and cheerful. Ideal for those looking for a cheap break in Barcelona

Nearest Beach: Bogatell Beach (400m away)

If you prefer an apartment, the Lugaris Rambla Apartments are just 300m from nearby Platja del Bogatell. Clean and comfortable apartments in El Poblenou, there's a Mercadona supermarket 5 blocks away and you're within walking distance of a variety of restaurants serving all sorts of cuisine. The nearest metro station, Llacuna is about 1km away.

Why we like it: For those who prefer to stay in an apartment while away

Nearest Beach: Llevant Beach (600m away)

Within walking distance of Llevant Beach and Barcelona Forum, this AC Hotel by Marriott is a great stay in the city. Often popular for events, the hotel is close to the beach, across the road from Diagonal Mar shopping centre and within walking distance to El Maresme Forum metro station. Plus there's a beautiful rooftop pool to enjoy here too.

Why we like it: Great for tourists and business travellers with a rooftop pool

Nearest Beach: Somorrostro Beach (200m away)

The luxurious Hotel Arts needed a special mention here as we absolutely love it. While it's a 5-star beach resort style hotel (and therefore expect a 5-star price), it's out of budget for many, but it's location just 200m from Somorrostro Beach and the bars and restaurants that go with it is ideal for a luxury beach break. Elegant style, Michelin-starred restaurants and a stunning spa facility make this the stuff of dreams.

Why we like it: The place to stay for something ultra special

Nearest Beach: Nova Icaria Beach (500m away)

Close to the Port Olimpic, the Hotel SB Icaria is a good standard 4-star hotel just 500 metres from Platja de la Nova Icaria beach. Modern decor, outdoor pool and Mediterranean restaurant make this a great place to stay while in the city. They also offer large family rooms, sleeping up to four people which is great when you've got kids in tow.

Nearest Beach: Sant Sebastia Beach (50m away)

Although on the pricier end, we simply couldn't leave out the W Hotel. An icon of the Barcelona skyline, the W Hotel enjoys a beachfront position at the end of Platja de Sant Sebastia. And with a stunning outdoor pool terrace, indoor pool and spa and the rooftop bar, the W Hotel in Barcelona is a must for a special occasion if you can stretch the budget a bit (alright, a lot) further.

Nearest Beach: Nova Mar Bella Beach (350m away)

Just a 350 metre walk from Platja de la Nova Mar Bella, the Occidental Atenea Mar is the hotel to book for an adults only hotel in Barcelona close to the beach. Part of the Barcelo brand of hotels, this one is modern, grown up and has a beautiful sun deck with sea views overlooking the Mediterranean.

Nearest Beach: Somorrostro Beach (200m away)

An affordable hotel with excellent outdoor pool and sun deck, the Sofitel Barcelona Skipper hotel is just a two minute walk from Platja del Somorrostro. With a fantastic location by Somorrostro beach, easy access to some ideal beachfront bars and restaurants and just a few minutes walk to Ciutadella Vila Olimpica metro station, Barcelona Zoo and Parc de la Ciutadella, The Sofitel Skipper is about a 30 minute walk to Las Ramblas and an ideal spot to stay in the city.

Why we like it: One of the closer hotels to the historic areas with a rooftop pool

Nearest Beach: Barceloneta Beach (900m away)

The modern and super sleek H10 Port Vell hotel sits nicely between the beach and Barcelona city centre. A couple of minutes from the Barceloneta metro station, the hotel is about 900m from the sand of Playa de la Barceloneta and the nightlife of the city and is ideal if you want the best of both worlds while you're on holiday. It's also rated amongst the 50 best hotels according to TripAdvisor reviews.
