Unsure of where to fly to enjoy a city break in Bruges? Ostend-Bruges Airport is technically classed as the closest airport to Bruges, however, with no direct flights to Bruges from the UK, your best option is to fly to Antwerp and take the 1 hr 45 minute train journey to Bruges, or fly to Brussels International Airport and take 1 hr, 30 minute train journey to Bruges.
Which Airport For Bruges?
If you live in the south east of England, a better option would be the 2 hour 20 minute Eurostar journey through to Brussels with a connecting train to Bruges, which can be bought on the same ticket from less than £70 per person, so a flight isn't necessary or perhaps worth the journey to the airport with all the security queues.
As there is no direct flight to Bruges from the UK, you'll need to work out which airport option is best for Bruges. While there are flights to Antwerp from London, Birmingham and Southampton, Brussels has the most flight options from the UK, including regional departures such as Belfast, Edinburgh and Bristol.
You'll then need to get from the airport to Bruges. Here are the journey's from Antwerp and Brussels to Bruges:
Antwerp Airport To Bruges
Journey Time: 1 hour and 45 minutes
Cost: Approx €17-18 per person
You'll need to take a 6 minute (6 stops) bus journey from the airport to Antwerpen-Berchem train station (or walking will take about 25 minutes). From here you can take a train directly to Bruges. The train journey will be about 1 hour and 20 minutes.
Brussels International Airport To Bruges
Journey Time: 1 hour and 30 minutes
Cost: Approx €16.40 per person
There is a direct train service from Brussels Airport to Bruges approx. every two hours. There are also trains to the central Brussels Midi station where you can change onto another train from Brussels to Bruges. Although not direct, changing trains in Brussels Midi station will only take an extra 10-15 minutes.
Brussels Charleroi Airport to Bruges
Journey Time: 2 hours and 10 minutes
Cost: Approx €10-34 per person
Brussels Charleroi Airport is a smaller airport south of Brussels used by the likes of Ryanair. Being further out, the transport links from here are very limited, however, Flibco Shuttles, a local bus shuttle company offers direct bus services between Charleroi Airport and Bruges. Operating similar to easyBus, you prebook your shuttle with fares varying on the time of day and availability. These can be booked online on the Flibco Shuttles website.
Brussels Midi/Brussels Zuid train station to Bruges
Journey Time: 1 hour
Cost: From free to £26 per person
If you have bought an 'Any Belgian Station' ticket with Eurostar, your onward journey from Brussels Midi to Bruges will be free, provided you travel on local SNCB trains only. Any travel on Intercity Express (ICE) and Thalys services are not permitted as part of this Eurostar ticket. A one way fare from Brussels to Bruges is £13 per person.
Taking The Eurostar To Bruges
Of course, there is also the option to enjoy the Eurostar to Brussels and take a local train onwards to Bruges on a Eurostar 'Any Belgian Station' ticket. The Eurostar journey will take roughly 2 hours and 20 minutes, plus the train from Brussels to Bruges which will take another hour. If you book early enough, a return journey from London to Bruges can be as little as £69pp, perfect for when you don't want the hassle of airports or changing from a flight to a train.
