Guide To Holidays In Caleta De Fuste

Caleta de Fuste, or El Castillo as it's often called, is a holiday resort on the east coast of Fuerteventura just south of the airport. The golden sand beach was actually man-made to cater for the demands of Europeans coming on holiday to the island and not wanting to spend time on transfer coaches before getting to their hotels. As such Caleta de Fuste has become a popular spot for Brits heading to the sunshine, and especially for families.

There are a range of hotels available in the resort all catering for different budgets and tastes. The area around El Castillo shopping centre has a bunch of shops, bars and restaurants serving all sorts of food, from local Spanish dishes to international cuisine. You'll also find plenty of evening entertainment here. The marina is host to several seafood restaurants while a walk along the promenade is a lovely end to an evening. Sadly you don't get the sunset on this part of the island, but taking a walk along the coast at sunrise is the perfect way to relax into your day.

Family Holidays

It's great for family holidays here. To start, the weather is ideal with year round sunshine, so far less likelihood of being stuck inside when you visit, even in December or January. Then you're also close to the airport, so no long and boring airport transfers. From the calm waters of the cove beach, to the poolside activities and resort kids' clubs, there's plenty to do too. Many of the hotels also have some sort of children's pool and family rooms or one bedroom apartments to cater for families.

Getting To Caleta De Fuste

On a package holiday, you'll obviously be flying into Fuerteventura Airport, with airlines like Jet2, TUI and easyJet all offering direct flights from the UK. From Fuerteventura airport, jump in a taxi for 15 minutes south and you'll hit the resort. From here your accommodation won't be too far. You'll be on the beach in no time.

Bus

Several bus routes pass through the town, including to the airport. Buses aren't very frequent so be sure to check the bus times at the airport or with your hotel before travelling.

Car Hire

Hiring a car is a great way to get around Fuerteventura, especially if you've book your flight and hotel or villa separately. There are a number of local and well known car hire brands on the island, like Cicar and Ecocar, both at the airport and in Caleta which can be booked in advance or during your holiday. The staff at your hotel can help you with this if you aren't booking anything until you arrive. You can also book online and pick up your car when you arrive at the airport.

Airport Transfers

Prebooked airport coach transfers are by far the most effective way to get from the airport. If you're booking a package with Jet2holidays or TUI, you'll find this is probably already included, whereas when booking with someone like On The Beach or loveholidays, you'll need to add this on as extra during the booking.

Things To Do In Caleta De Fuste

The popular holiday resort of Caleta de Fuste is ideally located just 15 minutes from Fuerteventura airport so you can be at your hotel not long after you arrive. Here are a couple of ideas for things to do in Caleta when visiting:

Caleta De Fuste Beach

Caleta de Fuste Beach is a man made, large stretch of beach in a cove, meaning the sea waters are not rough with small waves and great for families. The beach has a couple of volleyball nets up and is great if you want an alternative to hanging by the pool. A relaxing stroll along the Paseo Maritimo Promenade is also a great way to get some exercise.

Lunch at Chiringuito La Isla is a must. Situated on a rocky outcrop, this little eatery offers great views of Caleta, the marina and out to see. Enjoy lunch, dinner or just a few drinks in the sunshine.

The small Martello Towers in Caleta also provide a bit of history of the area built in the 1700s. A great family activity is walking all the way along the promenade from the Elba Sara Hotel to the Elba Castillo San Jorge Hotel, exploring the beach, stopping for ice cream, watching the boats in the marina and discovering the Martello Towers. See how many the kids can spot.

Boat Trips & Excursions

Another activity to keep the family busy is an excursion from the marina, either by boat or submarine. Prices vary depending on what's included and how long you're out there for, but boat trips are a great chance for the kids to explore the ocean and gets everyone away from the pool for the day. A perfect addition to Caleta de Fuste holidays.

Golf

There are only five golf courses in Fuerteventura and two of them are in Caleta de Fuste, Golf Club Salinas de Antigua and Fuerteventura Golf Club. Both offer a challenge for all players but it's the sun and scenery here which steal the show, with fantastic views from certain holes towards the ocean.

Water Sports

With a sandy bay, and sometimes warm sea, it's a great place to try out some water sports. Depending on where you stay, you might be able to do this from right outside your hotel, otherwise, either book online or take a wander along the beach to see what's on offer. You'll find all sorts here from jet skiing and windsurfing to snorkelling and even scuba diving at the Deep Blue Dive Center at the end of the harbour.

Shops & Restaurants

Of course it's not all fun in the sun and running riot on the beaches. You'll find the Centro Comercial Atlantico shopping centre between Elba Carlota and Elba Sara hotels, which has a range of clothing, health & beauty, and beach shops, as well as a supermarket and cinema. Otherwise, there are a few places dotted about including El Castillo shopping centre, closer to the main part of town. This is much busier and you'll find various restaurants and bars staying open until the small hours here, including the Irish bar, O'Connor's for some livelier nightlife. Make sure to try some local tapas that Spain is famous for.

Where To Stay In Caleta De Fuste

There are a range of hotels in Caleta de Fuste that will cater for all tastes, including holiday apartments to all-inclusive resorts. Try the Elba Palace Golf Resort for an upmarket or quieter stay, especially if you're on a golf holiday as this place overlooks the golf course. For those on a budget, give the Barcelo Castillo Beach Resort a try which is easy walking distance to the promenade and the local restaurants nearby. Stay at the end of the promenade at the Elba Sara Beach Hotel and you'll be close to a shopping centre too.

The Fuerteventura Beach Club is another cheap Caleta de Fuste holiday option for a budget friendly self catering stay about a 20-25 minute walk from the beach. This gives you the option to enjoy breakfast at home like the locals, but dinner in a local restaurant.

Holiday lets are also available in El Castillo, either booking directly or through tour operators. You may also find one or two private apartments on the likes of Airbnb or Booking.com, so you'll need to book your travel separately. If you do, just be mindful that it won't be ABTA or ATOL protected like you would be if you were to book a package through a protected tour operator like Jet2 or TUI.

Villas

There are a number of private villas for rent in the area, particularly around the golf courses. These are usually privately owned and not available through the usual tour operators. If you go down this route, just make sure you have comprehensive travel insurance.

All Inclusive

If you want to simply enjoy the sunshine without worrying about extra costs, the all inclusive options in Caleta de Fuste are ideal. If you're seriously watching your pennies, the 2-star Castillo Beach Park Bungalows offer all inclusive on a budget but is about a 25 minute walk from the stunning beach at Playa del Castillo. On the other hand, if you want the beach on your doorstep, try resorts like the Barcelo Fuerteventura Mar and Barcelo Fuerteventura Castillo. Of course, there's no harm in going out and trying some of the best restaurants in Caleta de Fuste.
